Piezo Drives as the Driving Force Behind Pixel Sub-Stepping

substepp_web1Piezo Drives from Physik Instrumente (PI) are used in Pixel sub-stepping, a method for improving the resolution of digital cameras and scanners. This is achieved by quickly and precisely moving the sensor at distances of less than one pixel along the X and Y axes (dithering). High-speed electronics compute images with sub-pixel-size resolution.

Piezo drives suitable for dithering not only operate with the required speed, dynamics, linearity and reproducibility, but also withstand tough operational conditions, because they fulfill the MIL standard. What’s more, they are compact and can be easily integrated into the relevant application.

Applications therefore exist across the whole field of imaging. The typical ones are biometric fingerprint scanners, infrared cameras and camera systems for cartographic aerial photography.
