Fast, Cost Effective Piezo Z-Stage for all Major Microscopes

The new PI nano™ piezo-Z stages are optimized for very fast step and settle and easy integration into high-resolution microscope applications. They feature a very low profile a large aperture, and travel ranges of up to 200 µm with sub-nanometer closed-loop resolution–ideal for leading-edge microscopy and imaging applications. The piezo stages are designed for inverted microscopes from the four major manufacturers: Leica, Nikon, Olympus and Zeiss. The low profile design of 20 mm (0.8”) facilitates the integration. The large aperture accommodates microscopy accessories such as slide holders, Petri dish holders, etc.

Higher Performance at Lower Cost: Packaged with Digital Controller

A compact digital piezo controller improves linearity and allows fast adaptation to changing load / settling / speed requirements and simple tuning from the controlling computer. It comes with three interfaces (USB, Analog and RS-232) for seamless compatibility with different control signals. The controller is also compatible with all major image acquisition packages and comes with a wide variety of software drivers and programming examples. The use of piezoresistive sensors allows for reduced cost despite the high performance.

New Sensors Improve Precision of S-340 Tip/Tilt Mirror

The S-340 piezo tip/tilt mirror from Physik Instrumente (PI) is now equipped with high-resolution strain gauge sensors. The S-340 thus achieves a resolution of 20 nrad at angles of 2 mrad about both orthogonal axes.

This large mirror is used for optics with diameters of up to 100 mm (4 inches). The resonant frequency for a mirror 50 mm in diameter, for example, is 900 Hz.

The S-340 can be operated by the new, low-cost E-616 controller. Together, they form a compact, high-performance solution for beam control and image stabilization as employed in astronomy, laser machining or optical metrology, for example.

Tested PILine® Technology for Extra Low-Profile Components

The M-660 PILine® rotation stage from Physik Instrumente (PI) opens up a new dimension in fast positioning, be it of samples in microscopy or biotechnology, or integrated into test systems of mass storage devices, for example. The stage achieves a speed of up to 2 rotations per second. The integrated U-164 PILine® linear motors offer a maximum torque of up to 0.3 Nm regardless of the direction of motion and the stage is designed for a maximum load of 1 kg. The direct force transmission of the ultrasonic piezo motors onto the ceramic friction ring on the moving platform make the stage compact and self-locking when at rest.

M-660 in figures:

  • Unlimited travel range
  • Maximum speed 720 °/s
  • Only 15 mm high
  • Ceramic direct drive with self-locking has significantly higher positional stability than classical motors
  • Direct position measurement with 40 µrad resolution
  • Free aperture with 35 mm Ø
  • Compact combination with translation stages is possible
